1.11.14 Democratization of Biofabrication — Arte en Barrios

Buenos Aires, Argentina | 2019–2020
Location: COOPA, Barrio 1.11.14
Role: Creation and direction of the community biofabrication laboratory; workshop teaching.

How can material cultivation become accessible beyond specialist laboratories?

Through the Arte en Barrios programme, I created and led a community biofabrication laboratory in vulnerable neighbourhoods like the 1.11.14 neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. Participants explored biological material-making processes using yerba mate, connecting a familiar element of everyday Argentine culture with new creative possibilities.

The community lab brought together cultivation, observation, experimentation, and shared learning. Working directly with living processes made time and transformation part of the experience: materials developed through ongoing attention rather than appearing as finished, ready-to-use products.

The project approached biofabrication as both a material practice and an educational opportunity. Bringing these processes into a neighbourhood setting opened access to experimentation and invited participants to explore their own ideas.

The photographs document participants, processes, and outcomes from this collective learning experience.
